Mangold, Elisabeth (Germany)

Elisabeth Mangold graduated in Medicine from the Ludwig Maximilians University at Munich, Germany, and achieved an MD at the Gene Center Munich in 2001. She trained as a Medical Geneticist at the Institute of Human Genetics, University of Bonn, where she is currently serving as an Attending, providing genetic counseling in the outpatient clinic at the Department of Medical Genetics. As a Private Lecturer she is actively involved in teaching medical students at the University of Bonn.

Elisabeth’s research interests are understanding the genetic basis of  normal and abnormal facial development with particular emphasis on cleft lip and cleft palate. She started her own research group in 2003 which has played a central role in the identification of the genetic basis underlying the two most common forms of orofacial clefting, namley nonsyndromic cleft lip with/without cleft palate and cleft palate only. Her research is funded by major grants from the German Research Foundation and the Austrian Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association.  Elisabeth takes an active interest in communicating research findings to patients and self support groups.
